SoCal Bookstore Event!
Posted By caveo on January 18, 2009
I’ll be doing a presentation/discussion/book signing tomorrow night at Vroman’s Bookstore in Pasadena. Info and details here:

Any Pasadena/LA readers for whom it isn’t a school night (and perhaps even if it is) are invited to come and have some fun with us. Vroman’s is a great bookstore, and I’ll be sketching in all the books. (Last time I was there, we closed down the store. Then the cafe below. And I finished the night drawing in the last few books standing on the street corner as it was starting to rain. I’m faster with the sketches now.)
The First Dragon

Hi Mr. Owen,
I attended your talk and book signing at Vromans bookstore in Pasadena, CA, on January 19th. I read all three books with anticipation and was delighted to see how you delivered the goods in the story.
The element of surprise at the end of book #1 where you reveal that the characters are the writers, C.S.Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien and Charles Williams is a nice touch. I liked the references to historical events and mythology, and the way you made use of time travel and parallel universes. I think the beautiful illustrations make the books unique and contribute to the story atmosphere. The Oxford regard for Cambridge made me chuckle. My brother-in-law went to Cambridge and he confirmed that their view of the folks at Oxford is mutual.
It was a shot in the arm for me to hear you talk about
your experiences as a writer and artist. That’s determination
and courage!
I’m a latecomer to the scene. Though I started drawing and writing stories when I was five, I didn’t start writing seriously with the intent to publish until six years ago as a middle-ager. Two things made that possible. One, I learned how to get out of my own way enough to be able to work on a story objectively; and two, I attended the writer’s conferences with SCBWI (Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, which gave me a realistic understanding of the craft and business of writing.
For me, writing is the fun part and the business of getting published is daunting part. I’m getting ready to submit two of my stories to science fiction magazines for the first time, and feel the bite of stage fright, but I can’t wait to step into the arena to see if maybe “I got game.”
Congratulations on bringing three beautiful books into the world. Thank you for being so patient in answering all of my questions at the Vroman’s book signing. I look forward to reading the fourth book in the Chronicles of the Imaginarium Geograhica. If you can, do drop me a line.
Regards,
Ann Palmer
